Gov. Ato North Star Awards Message

As Starship 3830 approaches touchdown and our year of service draws to a close, we pause to see where we are, what we have done and where we are going in our quest for excellence and achievement in service.

I am very pleased that fourteen (14) clubs have reached the Northstar; and more are drawing close but some still need to travel far. These clubs must continue their journey and remain steadfast in their quest for excellence as they move on with a new crew.

When I envisioned the North Star Award and the Governor’s Awards of Distinction, I wanted to promote a desire to: – Achieve a higher level of performance based on inter-club cooperation and alliances and not competition; – Develop an awareness of the need for balance in each of the clubs’ operations; – Encourage each club to look within itself and see how it can improve its structure, governance, and selection of service activities according to what suits the club and its resources. – To play “SAFE” and make club activities and service projects – Simple, affordable, fun, and effective.

Answered Prayer Across the Seas

“Thank you for your generosity, may God return the blessing a hundredfold” we read these words often, written in “Thank You” letters or solicitation letters. But we never really take these words seriously. We just brush them off as just one cliché. In Rotary we don’t really expect anything in return for the “work” that we do.

But a particular incident in my life brought these words to life.

March 4, 2008, during our club meeting I got a call from my sister that my brother Alfredo a.k.a Jhun who was on a company tour in Gold Coast, Australia had an accident. I thought it was just a minor accident until I was told that Jhun was given a 50/50 chance of surviving. He was hit by a speeding car driven by somebody under the influence of alcohol. Everybody in the family panicked because Australia is far and there’s very little chance of ever finding a relative or a friend of a friend unlike if it happened in the States where somebody knows somebody anywhere.

RIPR Monty, Up Close and Personal

By AG/RIPR Junior Aide Fed Sapitan

MONTY WITH HIS “GEM”

It was a God-sent opportunity to get to know a man, up close and personal, who truly breathes and lives the best values that Rotary represents.

“Monty”, as this man is fondly called, is Monty Jay Audenart, a dentist from the Rotary Club of Red Deer East in Canada. In the true spirit of Rotary, he has been using his vocation to treat indigent children all over the world. He is past president of his club – and, being a deeply committed Rotarian, it came as no surprise that he is a Director of Rotary International today.

My days of being “up close and personal” to this man are among the most amazing days of my life.

Looking back, my first chance to correspond with the man Monty was as early as the middle of last year, when he and his club’s members planned to take a trip to the Philippines. The plan was that his group would take a breather which would include a trip to Boracay, between two other Discons, one in Australia and the other in India.

For the man Monty, his plan to visit the Philippines included a few days which he would devote to do volunteer dental work in a remote barangay in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, to continue a personal mission which he undertook seven years ago. At the time that this visit to the Philippines was being firmed up, he was not aware that he would be designated as our Discon’s RIPR.

My club’s close relationship with Monty’s club stemmed from the days that his club’s past president, Neil Swensrude, was the inbound GSE Team Leader during the Centennial Year of PDG Tony Quila. Our friendship with Neil eventually led to a sisterhood agreement between his club and mine, the Rotary Club of Las Pinas- Camino Real.

The members of Rotary Club of Red Deer East requested me if I could arrange for them to touch base with the Rotarians in our district during our Discon. Upon learning that Monty would be coming to our district, DG Ato requested R.I. to designate him as our RIPR, which was quickly approved. And so, Monty Jay Audenart became our RIPR.

When DG Ato Magadia advised me that my Spouse Anna and I would serve as Junior Aides to RIPR Monty and his Spouse Liz, I had mixed feelings of pride and anxiety. Not to worry, I thought, because PDG Ernie Salas and Spouse Chichi would be the Senior Aides, anyway.

DG Ato's Message of Appreciation

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

My spouse Vicky and I extend our grateful thanks to everyone who made it possible to put together DISCON 2008. From concept, preparation, to execution, DISC0N 2008 was a product of cooperative effort of the District 3830 community.

1. Thank you to the Sharing Presidents for generating 977 pre-registered delegates and a minimal 25 onsite registrants that made it easier for the DISCON committee to plan the DISCON requirements.

2. Thank you to the Filipiniana dance participants – the 12 clusters, my classmates, the “Caring Presidents”, the Rotary Spouses, the GSE Inbound Team from France District 1720, the GSE out bound team to Connecticut and the Rotaractors and Interactors for a great show during the Friday Fellowship night.

3. Thank you to the Sharing Presidents, District Officers, and their spouses or partners for performing the main galactic dance and to the Past District Governors and their spouses for joining me and Vicky in the Governor’s traditional dance during the District Governor’s Ball on Saturday evening. Thank you likewise to the four Sharing Presidents who joined me in sharing their singing talents in an impromptu program.

4. Thank you to the Sharing Presidents who served as anchor Masters of Ceremony and/or Presentors, and the other District Officers and Rotarians who discharged other roles during the sessions. Thank you also to the Rotaractors and Interactors who provided entertainment.

5. Thank you to the District Officers who served as Marshals and program coordinators and to the Rotary Miss Olympics participants who served as usherettes.

6. Thank you to all Rotarians who contributed and/or assisted in organizing an innovative Rotary Window showcasing the various Club service projects on looping video in large screen LCD TV and photo exhibits at the House of Friendship.

7. Thank to all the Past District Governors of District 3830 who lent honor, prestige and support by their presence and participation at the DISCON.

State of the District Address

Every District Governor is faced with daunting challenges.
Organizing a District Conference was one of the most formidable tasks I had to face. Let me tell you why:

First, I had to make sure that we would have an effective and meaningful conference. This entailed my hands-on involvement in the program plans, technical requirements, physical arrangements and funding – and despite the actual costs, I wanted to make sure that the conference would be affordable to all.

Second, I feel that this conference is the most opportune time to let you know of what we have accomplished as Governor of District 3830 in the past 9 months. In short, I feel accountable to you, my fellow Rotarians, to make a report on the state of the District as of today.

It is in this context that I now have the task and the pleasure to share with you where we are at this time of the Rotary Year. My report will cover 10 major points of accomplishments.
